Bam Travis
When it comes to music, especially “Gospel” music, there is nowhere else in the world that has produced more legendary artist and singers like Detroit MI. As the legacy continues, singer, songwriter, producer and worship leader, Marvin “Bam” Travis III, is just another gift from the city that God has blessed and smiled upon.
Growing up in a household surrounded by music, ministry and family, Bam hails from a rich legacy of prominent musical heritage. Singing since the age of 2 and playing the drums since age 4, his parents, Pastors Marvin Travis Jr. and LaJune Travis, recognized his gifts early on in life and helped to nurture and cultivate his talents. Bam’s spiritual and musical journey took shape while watching and learning from both parents. His dad, whom he dubs as the “baddest guitarist” to ever play, helped him as a musician and drummer. His mother, who he considers one of his personal favorite vocalists, is where he gets his vocal abilities from. A few of Bam’s other musical influences include Fred Hammond, Commissioned, Take 6, Kim Burrell, Brandy, Marcus Cole, Calvin Rodgers, Men Of Standard and the late drummer, Marvin McQuitty.
As Bam grew older and his gift as a musician matured with him, it wasn’t long before the R&B world came knocking on his door. For a short season in his life, Bam’s skills as a drummer landed him a gig touring with the legendary singer, Charlie “Uncle Charlie” Wilson, of the famed “Gap Band.” During this time, Bam was able to share the stage with notable artist as, Babyface, Jill Scott, Mint Condition, Chaka Khan and Doug E Fresh, just to name a few. Eventually however, Bam came to the understanding that God’s purpose and plan for his life was much greater then he could ever imagine.
Returning back to his first love and gospel roots, his passion to spread the love of God through song and worship is evident in his music. With the release of his 1st solo project (April 14, 2023) entitled “Faithful”, listeners and followers of good music are in for something special. The project is a joint collaboration between famed music director, Cordell Walton, rising producer and songwriter, Phil Bates and Bam, who masterfully placed each song in perfect listening order. Bam’s smooth and soulful vocals, layered over well written and produced tracks, are sure to gain cross-over appeal among young people.
As the inaugural winner of Bethany Christian Services, “Battle for Family”, Bam had the honor of working with one of his influencers, the legendary award winning singer, songwriter and super producer, Fred Hammond. Hammond, who directed and produced the music video for the debut single “Compromise”, also makes a special guest appearance. The song, written and produced by Phil, let’s believers know that, even though we’re living in the last days, you can’t afford to compromise your diligence and commitment unto Christ.
Prior to the release of his solo project, Bam was a featured guest artist on the song, “Go to Church” from the movie soundtrack “A Beautiful Soul.” The song and movie were both written and produced by one of his favorite artist as well, Deitrick Hadden. Bam can also be heard singing with Lowell Pye (Men of Standard) on Marcus Stringer’s hit single, “Just Remember.” When he is not out ministering in song, you can usually find he and his beautiful wife, Ashley, serving faithfully at their home church, “Great Faith Ministries International”, under the leadership of Apostle Wayne T. Jackson & Dr. Beverly Y. Jackson.
