Carlos Faison is an American film, television and stage actor, writer and producer. The Detroit, Michigan native first got his start in the entertainment business at age 23 in 1987. His humble beginnings started when singer, songwriter and producer, Fred Hammond, recruited him to be his personal bass tech and roadie for the legendary gospel group, Commissioned. His extensive work with the group for 31 years, allowed him to travel and meet different people across the country, even as far as London England, and the Bahamas. In 2018, he officially retired from his position as the group’s road manager, but not before fulfilling his personal dream of bringing the brothers of Commissioned back together again. In the summer of 2017, he initiated a conversation with a key group member, which started the conversation amongst the other members of Commissioned. It was from that one phone call that ultimately led to the “Commissioned 2019 Reunion Tour”, with all 6 of the original group members, including Marvin Sapp.

The Actor Inside

In 1993, while touring with the group in the nationally acclaimed stage play “Only the Strong”, he unknowingly debuted his acting career. The timing was just right! One of the co-stars of the play had an emergency that required him to return home. The co-star suggested that the new crew member, Faison, fill in for him until his return. And just like that, with no prior acting experience and only 2 days to learn the part, the producer who had neglected to hire any understudies, reluctantly agreed to give Faison a chance. It was the catalyst needed to jumpstart his acting career.

After touring for a year with the production, he moved to San Bernardino, CA in January 1994. It was here that he met actress, singer, songwriter and producer Mrs. Daz Patterson of “God’s Trying To Tell You Something” and “God’s Trombone”. That chance meeting with Mrs. Patterson led her to hire Faison as Musical Director (MD) for her new stage production, “Talk Is Cheap.” Faison’s new MD role allowed him to showcase his leadership abilities, while at the same time, hone in on his bass guitar skills. He re-arranged all the songs for the show; as well as created the opening theme song.

In March 1995, he moved back to Detroit where he quickly started acting in local stage productions. It was during one of his performances that a friend approached him about a co-starring role in his upcoming show, “Ain’t Nothing Like Family.” The show paired Faison with comedian Tony Roberts and 3 legendary television actors from the 70’s; BernNadette “Thelma” Stanis of the famed “Good Times” series, Ernest “Raj” Thomas and Fred “Rerun” Berry of the hit TV series “What’s Happening” and “What’s Happening Now.” As it turns out, in April 1997, this production went on to make history as the first African American stage play to run at the historic “Opera House Theater” in Detroit MI

In 2001, Faison landed the leading role in “Everybody Talkin’ Bout Heaven Ain’t Goin” written by the late Lizzie Berry (“Why Good Girls Like Bad Boys”). The show also featured a new and up-coming young actor, Brandon T. Jackson (“Big Mammas’ House, “Like Father, Like Son” and “Roll Bounce”). A short time later (2004), he teamed up with Ms. Vickie Winans and her stage production, “Torn Between Two Loves”. While on tour he be-friended the show’s co-star, Anthony Price, who would later introduce him to his famous Hollywood brother-in-law, Mr. Samuel L. Jackson.

“It was about 9:00 pm on a Wednesday night, and Sam was in town for the Ryder Cup golf tournament. Anthony and I went by his hotel room to hang out with him for a while. We got there and found ourselves laughing and joking for hours. He was so cool and down to earth. It’s something I’ll never forget”, recalls Faison.

Feeling motivated at the beginning of 2008, he decided to write, produce, and star in his own stage production, “Laundromat.” He solicited the talents of his long-time close friend, LeAnne “LeLee” Lyons of the 90’s R&B group “SWV”, Kel Mitchell (“Keenan and Kel” show) and film and stage actor, Roland “Buddy” Lewis. The production was shown to a select group of guests and promoters by special invitation only.

After a few more plays and a boost of confidence, Faison wanted to take his career to the next level. In December 2009, he had a conversation with an industry professional, who encouraged him to sign up with the talent agency, CTA. On his very first movie audition with his new agency, he was sent in to read for a small part as an umpire for a major film. However, when he got to the audition site to read for the part, famed Hollywood director Oz Scott, assigned him the reading of a different character. He sent him out into the hallway and gave him 10 minutes to study his lines. When he was called back into the audition, his acting range impressed Mr. Scott and the writers, to the degree, that they cast him in a supporting role as “Coach Jeff” instead. The family fun film “Home Run Showdown” paired him with some of Hollywood’s best-known actors; Dean Cain, Matthew Lillard, Annabeth Gish, Wayne Duvall, and legendary actor Barry Bostwick. Not bad for the 45-year-old who had never taken an acting class!

Since that summer of June 2010, he’s never looked back and has been seen in a host of films, including his co-starring role in the highly acclaimed feature film “Black Ice”. In this film, Faison has the esteemed honor of portraying one of the first African American hockey players in the NHL.

Music And Acting Collide

Outside of film, Faison’s commercial and music video work has gained national exposure for him as-well. In 2019 he secured a spot in Pop-star Katy Perrys’ music video “Pendulum” for her world tour. Earlier that year in January, he was introduced to football fans everywhere appearing in a “Super Bowl 53” commercial. Three years later in 2022, he did it again by securing another commercial for “Super Bowl 56”, earning him the nick-name, “Super Bowl Los”. His other film and stage working credits includes working alongside: Bruce Willis, Robin Givens, Ryan Phillippe, Curtis ‘50 cent” Jackson, James Romero, Jamie Kaler, Carl Payne, Christopher Williams, Devon Werkheiser, Tony Grant, Shirley Murdock and many more.
